About this site

Virginia Urology has been treating patients in the Greater Richmond area since 1929 and now runs 60+ providers across seven locations. The site is a complete rebuild: 18 Etch templates, 6 custom post types, 7 taxonomies, and 6 JetEngine relationships.

Content architecture: Most of the scale comes from a deliberate structural decision. Men’s Health and Women’s Health run as fully parallel sections with their own post types, rather than one Conditions CPT filtered by a gender taxonomy. That means four content CPTs (men’s conditions, men’s services, women’s conditions, women’s services) before you even get to providers and locations, and it roughly doubles the archive template count. It’s worth it. Editors only see content that belongs to their section, queries stop carrying a gender filter everywhere, and a men’s condition can only ever relate to a men’s service. The data model enforces what a taxonomy filter could only suggest.

URL structure: Hub taxonomies drive the entire URL scheme through rewrite slugs alone. /mens-health/hub/prostate-health/, /womens-health/conditions/incontinence/, and everything in between resolve without a single line of custom routing. The whole information architecture lives in CPT and taxonomy configuration.

Relationships: Six many-to-many JetEngine relations connect providers to all four content types and conditions to their treatment options. The provider block on hub archive pages runs a two-hop chain: hub term to its conditions and services, then through those to the providers who treat them.

Search: Search got its own build. SearchWP PRO with a custom synonym layer, a dedicated results template, and a header search modal. Patients search in simple language, not clinical terms, so a good chunk of the work was mapping how people actually describe things (“can’t hold it,” “getting up at night”) to the right condition pages. The synonym layer is split so a non-developer on the team can keep expanding it through the SearchWP UI without touching code.

Dual theming from one component set: Women’s Health runs a completely different color scheme from the rest of the site, and the Men’s Performance Clinic runs its own again, all from a single set of components. Two body classes remap the ACSS token scales sitewide, and every section reskins itself. No duplicate stylesheets, no variant components, no conditional markup. The design system does the work.
